According to Newsweek (and they are not alone) there is a looming threat that lies behind the scenes – in places you can’t see or hear. It will come at the speed of light, and you may not know it has hit until it’s too late.

Since the turn of the century it has been demonstrated that hackers, when organized, can wreak havoc on unprotected systems. The 2001 Chinese-US confrontation due to the landing of a US plane on Chinese soil is an example, when hackers on both sides of the ocean took turns defacing websites, primarily of the others’ governments. The same kind of attacks took place a year before, in a Palestine/Israel cyber conflict. In this case it was believed that the attack caused the local economies to deteriorate.

Now Islamic extremists are posting on web sites a means for their followers to perform ‘acts of terror’ without putting themselves in harms way. It’s what is commonly referred to as ‘cyber terrorism,’ and most computers that are connected to the Internet are vulnerable. Many are just completely defenseless.

What are the targets? Realistically ideal targets would include power plants, banks – basically your economic, utility and military infrastructures. However you cannot exclude any computer, since a properly/secretly placed trojan horse (virus) can cause a home computer to act as an online warrior for someone to begin remote attacks from.

What it boils down to is that, quite simply, we will experience this ‘cyber war’ at some point. Ultimately it will be a matter of who is better prepared and protected to fend off such a virtual invasion. The US government has been trying for years to secure the nations network infrastructure, but all of the analysts continue to report that it is ineffective.

Is your computer protected? Are your networks? It’s just a matter of time…
